Some of Bill's Former Students

Matthew Morrison - was in the very first Vocal Tech class I taught at CAP21. It wasn't hard to predict he was going places. I told him at one point, "You DO know you're going to be a star, don't you?" He just smiled. He knew it, too. ("Hairspray", "Light In The Piazza", "South Pacific", "Finding Neverland", GLEE - TV)
Anne Hathaway -was a junior in high school and was in the summer program at CAP. Annie was in a section of Vocal Performance which I taught. She was just lovely... golden voice and as eager to learn as any student with whom I've worked! Academy Award, SAG and Golden Globe Winner - best actress "Les Mis"
Kristen Bell - and I worked closely together for 3 years. She was in my Vocal Tech and Vocal Performance classes and was my private student, as well. She'd come into every lesson and sing, "Oh won't you marry me, Bill?" In hindsight, I should have! ; ) ("Adventures of Tom Sawyer", "The Crucible" - Bway / "Veronica Mars - TV, "Frozen" - Film / People's Choice award winner 2017!)
2011 Tony Award Winner Nikki M. James - and Kristen were in my Vocal Tech class. I know... can you imagine them in the same room! Then they both went into "Tom Sawyer" together on Bway. Nikki was the genuine article from the get-go. What a pro! She radiated love in all she did and continues to do! ("Book Of Mormon", "All Shook Up", "Les Mis")
2018 Tony Award Winner Lindsay Mendez - is nearly a household name among theatergoers in NYC. When she studied with me, she was fresh out of HS and she'd come out to my place in Brooklyn and hang. Halloween, Thanksgiving... she's still my boo and it's been such a treat bringing her in to work with my students in the past! ("Wicked" / "Dog Fight" / "Godspell") Star!!!
2019 Tony Award Winner Ali Stroker - I first had a chance to work with Ali when she and my niece Jennifer were in Camp Broadway when they were 13. I directed her group in a mini Sound of Music. Then she came to CAP21 to train and I got to work on helping her put together her audition material in the Audition Repertoire class I taught. You'll remember her from GLEE Project and "Spring Awakening" (Bway - Deaf West '15) . So proud of all she has accomplished so far!
Alex Brightman - this kid has been busy! When I first worked with Alex, he was a junior in HS and even then he was passionate and dedicated. His success was nearly immediate with "Wicked", "Matilda", "Big Fish" and the lead in "School of Rock"! Rock on, Brightmonster!
Rodney Ingram - I will long remember Rodney not only for his voice but because he's one of the most loving guys with whom I've had the pleasure of working. The fact that it happened so quickly for him is testament to how hard he trained. Playing the role of "Aladdin" is only fitting, since this kid is destined to fly! He is currently Raul in "Phantom" on Bway xox
Bobby Steggert - is one of the dearest young men I've ever met. He was soft-spoken and had the most plaintive quality to his voice - yet there was such depth in his soul. I love this guy and I'm thrilled we've had a chance to work together professionally in recent years! ("Ragtime", "Yank", "Big Fish", "Mothers and Sons")
Timothy Hughes - as imposing a talent as he is a figure on and off-stage. With "Hadestown", "Frozen" and "Chaplin" under his belt, he's a new beloved one of Broadway audiences!
Jason Tam - Jason is a genuine triple-threat. The kid not only sings and dances like a God, but he's riveting as an actor. If you've not seen his audition clip from "One Singular Sensation" on YouTube - you MUST. He's always working because everyone loves him. ("A Chorus Line", "Lysistrata Jones", "If/Then")
Jared Gertner - was always smiling... but you never knew exactly what he was up to. Clever, talented and always ready - he worked right out of school. "Spelling Bee", "Plaid Tidings" and his signature role of Elder Cunningham in "Book of Mormon"!
Kyle Selig - will forever be dear to my heart. The nice guy he played, Elder Price, in "Book of Mormon". That's him. He's a sweet, talented young man... that's why his going into "Mean Girls" was such a treat!
Soap Opera fans may know Peter Porte from his years on "The Young and the Restless". He's also a Hallmark movie heart throb. But most importantly, he and my dog Sadie had an ongoing love affair!
Renaissance woman, actor & composer, Shaina Taub appeared in "Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812", played Feste in The Public Theatre's "Twelfth Night", and is currently collaborating with Elton John on the score for the upcoming "The Devil Wears Prada" musical.
Carrie Manolakos - I defy anyone to find a nicer gal in the industry than Carrie. She has one of the most amazing voices in the business and is a gifted songwriter. She touched audiences as Sophie in "Mamma Mia". I love this young lady!
Handsome Michael Benjamin Washington most recently graced the Broadway stage as Bernard in "Boys In The Band". Other NY credits: "Funny Girl", "La Cage" and the original cast of "Mamma Mia!" xoxo
Cristin Milioti - I remember going to see "Once" and being thoroughly enchanted by it. I thought the lead girl was quirky and compelling and incredibly talented and it wasn't until I actually looked at the program that I realized it was Cristin! She had totally transported me and was nothing like the young lady whose work I so admired in class :) (TV - "How I Met Your Mother", "Fargo" / Grammy Award Winner for "Once")
Adam Gwon - most folks know Adam as the composer of the perfect musical - "Ordinary Days". But he was in my Vocal Perf class and he knew, early on, that if he wanted to write for actors who sing he had to learn along with them. And did!
Phoebe Strole - Phoebe and I always shared a special bond. She had that "little sister" vibe that endeared her to everyone. Her edgy work in "Spring Awakening" was a real proving ground for her. She's beloved among all who know her! (TV - "30 Rock", "Law & Order", "Rescue Me")
Nick Spangler - talk about the archetypal leading man. Good-looking, honest and talented... Nick caught my attention his first year and he grew into a formidable talent. I loved working with him in Audition Rep. Finding songs for a guy like Nick was pretty easy. He can do it all! ("Book of Mormon" / "Cinderella" / "It Shoulda Been You" / "American In Paris")
Krysta Rodriguez - is one of the most beautiful young ladies with whom I've ever had the pleasure of working. She was remarkable... I remember thinking that she was already 'cooked' when she came to CAP21. Her work in "Addam's Family" changed angsty young teenage girls' lives forever! (Bway - "Addams Family", "A Chorus Line", "Spring Awakening" (both), "In The Heights" / TV - "Smash")
Alli Mauzey - is a monster talent! She introduced "Screw Loose" in the musical "Cry Baby" and blew the roof of the place. Then she turned around and wowed Broadway audiences as Glinda in "Wicked". She was impish and delightful as a student - now she's a star!
Max Jenkins has been a busy boy! TV audience know and love him for his work in "Dead To Me" and Max Carnegie in the NBC series "The Mysteries of Laura". He had guest roles in shows like "Gossip Girl", "30 Rock", and "Orange is the New Black". Love me some Max!
Zachary Sayle & Dan DeLuca - stars of the First National Tour of "Newsies". Zach's (Crutchie's) folks used to send him up on a plane from Arkansas once a month just to work with me - at the tender age of 15. He originated the role of Ralphie in the musical version of "A Christmas Story". Before he was 18 he booked "Newsies". (btw, his dad's company did my website!) And Dan (Jack) was a summer CAP21 student who then came to us in the 2 year training program. He is charismatic and has always had the drive it takes to succeed! (Goodspeed Opera House / St. Louis Muny / Weston Playhouse)
Brittney Johnson - an angel with a voice that was Heaven-sent. She and I spent all four of her undergrad years preparing her for the success that immediately followed. "Les Mis", "Beautiful"... and most recently: Glinda in "Wicked". She's my gifted and lovely friend. ("Motown", "Beautiful", "Sunset Blvd")
Michael Longoria was the sweetest kid. Audiences know him for his work in "Jersey Boys" but he also won a Barrymore acting nomination for "Peter Pan & Wendy" and was one of the nicest kids in town (literally) in "Hairspray"!
Matt Forbes - This young crooner from Canada showed great promise early on. Though he worked with me on Musical Theater repertoire, the two of us had a mutual first love in common - Sinatra!
Morgan Marcell - came to me a while back as a dancer who knew that she wasn't going to be able to dance forever. "Teach me to sing!" So I did. And she listened. She studied weekly with me and made huge strides... so much so that she landed "In The Heights", slid into "Hamilton" and then on to "Bandstand" - as a singer/dancer!
The effervescent Rachel Bloom has won Two Golden Globe Awards for acting, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend". Emmy nomination for writing, "Robot Chicken" Always loved working with Rachel!

SOME  BACKGROUND

Bill's teaching is based on his early training in the voice and speech work of both Arthur Lessac and Kristen Linklater – including IPA (Edith Skinner).  His exposure to the Alexander Technique had a profound impact on his understanding of the instrument and he coached with disciples Sarah Barker and Saura Bartner.  His physical work in the Lessac training was under the tutelage of Ruth Wallace.

Mr. Daugherty's early vocal studies were in the classical bel canto style of singing, however his interests lied elsewhere and he later became focused on musical theater and jazz.  He studied with Dawin Emmanuel (SMSU) and Kate Ufema (Webster) before moving to New York and then in the private studios of Ute Rose and Anthony DiLeva in Manhattan.  He has been most profoundly influenced by the work and mentoring of Dr. Pamelia Phillips (CAP21, NYU and Molloy College –
New York)

Bill began his teaching career in 1994 and has worked with well over 5,000 students in his twenty years as a vocal teacher and coach.  He has been affiliated with CAP21 since their early years as one of the premier training facilities for musical theater students in the country.

Backstage wrote a feature article on Mr. Daugherty in 2008 about his segue into teaching from having established himself as a performer initially. Here is a link to that piece:
